What is Pelvic floor therapy?

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialty involving the evaluation and treatment of problems that are often related to the pelvis. This includes pelvic, sacroiliac and low back pain, urinary problems like incontinence or difficulty voiding, bowel problems like constipation and bowel leakage, and sexual problems like pain or discomfort with sexual activity. These conditions often include involvement of the pelvic floor muscles, a group of muscles that form a bowl in the bottom of the pelvis. These muscles run from the pubic bone to the tailbone, and play a role in urinary, bowel and sexual function as well as support and stability of the pelvis and spine.

Our Process

Pelvic floor therapy starts with a comprehensive evaluation that not only allows us to understand your story and the specific (often very personal) problems you are experiencing, but also allows us to perform a comprehensive exam to get to the root of the problem—not simply treat the symptoms! From here, we establish a treatment program that can include a combination of education, skilled manual therapy, and specific exercises to help you overcome whatever challenges you are dealing with. We help people stop leaking. Start using the bathroom comfortably again. Overcome pelvic pain. Get back to pain-free sex. Sit comfortably again. And much, much more! BIOFEEDBACK

Biofeedback is the monitoring of normal, automatic bodily function. This can be used to retrain pelvic floor muscles in order to regain voluntary control

MANUAL THERAPY

Manual therapy uses specific hands-on techniques to diagnose and treat soft tissues and joint structures for the purpose of reducing pain. This also includes increasing range of motion, reducing or eliminating soft tissue inflammation, inducing relaxation, improving contractile and non-contractile tissue repair, extensibility, and/or stability, facilitating movement, and improving function.

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE/SCAR TISSUE RELEASE

Painful muscles and joints caused by certain diagnoses like Fibromyalgia can benefit from MFR to help soften and reduce trigger points and muscle tension.

DRY NEEDLING

Dry needling for one or more major muscle groups can help release tension and pain. Overall these treatments are so effective that after one or two sessions you can see amazing results of less pain and more function

CORE STABILIZATION EXERCISES

Core stabilization exercises are given to patients to help strengthen muscles that support the spine and help prevent lower back pain. Through various exercises, a patient will find how to balance their spine and reduce tension.

BLADDER AND BOWEL RETRAINING

There are many ways to retrain your bladder and bowel, but treatments usually depend on the state of the patient and type of ailments they are experiencing. A combination of of treatments are often used to retrain the bladder and bowel in order to see the greatest improvement. Some of the treatments we offer include biofeedback, manual therapies (STM/MFR), colonic massage as well as education on the subject in order to understand what is going on and how to fix it.
